Comment: In the year 2000, you would be justified in expecting a richer treatment of this theme, but Verhoeven's vigorous assault on the audience is very entertaining until it jumps the track near the end. A high-tech, beautifully-executed invisible man movie doesn't really REQUIRE explosions and giant physical "gags" -- they even get in the way of the best parts of the movie. The story itself is pretty much standard Mad Scientist stuff: experimenter uses himself as subject, goes nuts, kills people. The differences here are the astonishingly realized special effects -- the effects seem more integrated into the fabric of this movie than ever before -- the acting, and the dynamic, exciting direction of Paul Verhoeven. If you don't expect dazzling originality in terms of story, you'll probably have a great time with HOLLOW MAN. It's not as good as Verhoeven's best American movies, but for most of its length, it's a lot of fun. And the reappearance of the gorilla (and the disappearance of Kevin Bacon) are instant-classic scenes.
