Lord of the Rings, The (1978) [English (MPEG Layer III, 127 kBit/s, 44 kHz, Stereo)]
Genre: Animation / Fantasy / Adventure
Length: 2h 12m 0s
Director: Ralph Bakshi
Plot outline: Only the first two parts of J.R.R. Tolkein's classic fantasy trilogy of the same name are covered by this rotoscoped animated feature about a band of travellers of different races who seek to defeat an evil sorcerer and his armies with the aid of powerful but insidious magical ring. See also _The Hobbit_. Summary written by Keith Loh {loh@sfu.ca}
Comment: I'm still trying to figure out what the heck Peter S. Beagle, an ardent Tolkein fan and excellent fantasy writer as well (The Last Unicorn) was thinking, and how much input he REALLY had in the actual production (did Bakshi make his own edits to the script?) The opening monologue about the history of the One Ring, for instance, was cleverly done. It appropriately and cunningly got non-Tolkein readers up to speed. Leaving out Tom Bombadil was a wise decision, since Bombadil has absolutely nothing to do with the story. However, leaving out the Ents? What, did Gandalf all by his lonesome defeat 50,000 orcs? What WERE those orcs, anyway? They looked like mutants from Total Recall, not twisted versions of Elves. It did have its moments, though -- my favorite scene is still when Frodo offers the One Ring to Galadriel. Her response is priceless, and very true to the book.
